Winter Walks at Wells-Next-the-Sea
The weather forecast showed improvement, so we set off for Wells-next-the-Sea, hoping that the morning fog would clear. By the time we arrived, the sun broke through the clouds as we made our way to the stunning beach.
Quick Snapshot of Wells-next-the-Sea
Wells-next-the-Sea is home to one of the most best beaches in Norfolk, Holkham Beach. This huge sandy beach is backed by an amazing woodland backdrop, making it a go to place for natural beauty and adventure.
Getting to the beach from the town is a pleasant walk, ideal for families who enjoy taking in the scenery along the way. Alternatively, you can park closer at the Beach Car Park if you’re looking for a shorter route (can be tricky to park on really busy days). The town itself is decent enough, good for crabbing or grabbing a bite to eat at some pretty good fish and chip shops.
Our Day at Wells-next-the-Sea
It was one of those busy post-Christmas days when everyone had the same idea to get out and enjoy the fresh air. Most of the car parks were packed, so we decided to park in the town and walk to the beach. The sun was shining, and the kids had a great time spotting all sorts of birds along the way.
When we got to the woods, the fun really started. The woodland at Wells-next-the-Sea is such a brilliant place for families. The kids took the kaleidoscope out for its first outing, and they loved using it to see the patterns in pinecones, leaves, and everything else they could find. There’s something about those woods that just makes you want to explore every little corner (you could easily forget the beach is the other side of the dunes and still have an amazing day out).
The kids were keen to try out the rope swings that we usually go on, but we decided to skip them this time (much to their disappointment!) and head straight for Holkham Beach. The sun was starting to set, so we made the most of it. On the beach, we made race tracks for toy cars, my wife and daughter did some painting, and we even filled the kaleidoscope with sand and shells to see how it looked. Honestly, it was one of those moments where everyone’s just happy doing their own little thing.
The best part of the day came right at the end. As we were walking along the shoreline, we spotted a seal swimming just a few meters from us. It was such an amazing surprise and a perfect way to finish up.
