Fun Days at Kelling Heath
Share
Last summer, we packed up our trusty VW campervan Buzz, hooked on our Ventura Roof Tent, and set off for five days at the dreamy Kelling Heath campsite. Nestled in a scenic corner of Norfolk, this campsite turned out to be the perfect escape (I'd passed the place several times walking when staying in nearby Weybourne with friends each Christmas but had never been into the site).
Pitch Perfect
We’d heard that if you called them, you can choose your spot, so we did just that. Our pitch was tucked away in a quiet corner, surrounded by trees and with just enough privacy to feel like we were in our own little world. Despite the site’s size, the layout is so spacious that you never feel hemmed in. It’s camping with the perfect blend of community and personal space (a key for us, we love the kids making friends, but also want our own holiday).
Camping Comforts and Family Fun
Kelling Heath has nailed the balance between natural beauty and family-friendly amenities.
-
The Pools: There’s a gorgeous outdoor pool for sunny days (one of the kids got stung by a wasp, but the staff were very helpful to ease the pain), but the indoor pool saved us when the temperatures dipped (plus use of the nice indoor showers). Both were clean, well-maintained, and fun for all ages.
-
Kids Entertainment: Each evening, the main site came alive with kids' activities, giving us grown-ups a little downtime while the little ones enjoyed themselves.
-
Play Areas: The central play area is decent, but venture a little further, and you’ll find an incredible wooden play area that’s like a mini adventure park. It’s perfect for letting off steam as a family.
-
Food Pop-Ups: Each evening, food vans rolled in with tempting offerings. From wood-fired pizzas to hearty burgers, it was the ultimate way to dodge cooking without guilt.
Outdoor Adventures
We didn’t just lounge (although there was some of that too). Here’s how we spent our days:
-
Bike Rides: The forest trails were a hit, and hiring bikes onsite made it all too easy.
-
Pond Dipping: This turned into a highlight for the kids. They made new friends while discovering all sorts of pond creatures.
-
Playground Hopping: Past the site centre area there is a hidden gem of the wooden adventure zone, the kids were spoiled for choice.
Hammock Time
Our new Viver Portable Hammock deserves a special shoutout. This thing was a game-changer. It’s big enough to fit an adult and two small kids, but a dream for a solo retreat for relaxing with a book or to just hide from the kids for a few minutes.
Setup took less than five minutes, and it packed down small enough to stow easily in "Buzz." If you are tired of the standard camping chair or want to up your relaxation then these are a must.
Spotless Facilities
A campsite’s facilities can make or break the experience, and Kelling Heath gets full marks. The shower blocks were pristine, with plenty of hot water. The toilets were clean throughout our stay, and everything felt well-maintained.
Final Thoughts
Kelling Heath ticked all the boxes for a relaxing and adventurous family getaway. From the spacious pitches to the range of activities and the thoughtful little extras like evening food vans, it’s a campsite we’d happily return to. Whether you’re up for forest adventures, poolside lounging, or hammock napping, Kelling Heath has you covered.
